The Lorax

Last week we read Dr. Seuss' book "The Lorax". The children in our class talked about the environmental message in this story and decided it was an important message to share. We changed it a bit and turned it into a play. Mrs. Oddy made us some costumes and we recorded it in front of our green screen. Here is our movie. (You will need to watch it in two parts.) -Mrs. Malkoske

Our Meeting with Mrs. Caldwell

On Friday, a group of children from our classroom went to see Mrs. Caldwell about posting our recycling signs around the school. They also told her about our plans to buy blue bins for all of the classrooms in the school. They took our digital voice recorder with them so that they could share their meeting with the rest of us. You can listen in too!

Snowy Day!

This  week   at  school  we   had   recess  a  minute  ago. We made an art project outside after recess.  We had gym and played soccer and volleyball.   We had math and we  read  too.  This week at school we had hot lunch and we ate pizza.  We throw the pizza boxes in the garbage and Mrs. Malkoske had to take all the empty pizza boxes out and put them in the recycling bin.

Please Help Us RECYCLE!!!!!

This morning we went to library and learned about day and night, seasons, water, air, and recycling and pollution with Mrs. Klausen. Then it was pizza lunch. After lunch when everyone was done their Boston Pizza, everyone put their boxes in the garbage can! (All of the garbage cans in all of the classrooms were full of pizza boxes!) That caused a big problem for Mrs. Malkoske. She took our pizza boxes out of the garbage and put them in a recycling bin. After recess, we talked about it. We noticed that there was a recycling sign on the bottom of the pizza boxes. When we talked about it, we decided that if we had a blue bin with a recycling sign in our classroom, we would have recycled our boxes. Since this was problem in all of the classrooms, we decided to do something about it. We made recycling signs for all of the classrooms to remind them to recycle. We had some other ideas about what we could do too:

1. Get or make blue bins for all of the classroom.
2. Pick up the garbage on the playground.
3. Make new stuff out of cardboard boxes for kids who don't have toys.
4. We talked about Vermi Worms and how they could help us to recycle food scraps.

Please help us by reducing, reusing and recycling!

The Fun Week

This week was a short week so we are blogging together today. Here we go....

Today we did family groups. We made a golden ticket and we made a paper person that looked like us. We were learning about respect. In our family groups we go with kids from all different grades. It was fun because we did a special craft.

We also had an assembly and sang a song called "Peace". It was a Remembrance Day assembly. Amy and Cole got to hold our wreath. We wore sticker poppies.
We made an art projects with our hands. They made a heart in the middle.

Amy got to ride in a limosine to McDonald's for lunch with our principal, Mrs. Caldwell, and a bunch of kids. She ate a cheeseburger and ice cream. There was candy in the limo.

We did more portfolio stuff. We put more stuff in the reading section and in the writing section and in the math.

Miss Rosney came today.

We made our published books. Some people's books aren't finished yet. They take a long time!

Have a great long weekend Room 2 families!!!

Dylan on a Pumpkin?!?!

Dylan was the lucky winner of our pumpkin draw. Mr. Malkoske will be carving his face on a pumpkin that will be at our Halloween celebration on Friday. Stay tuned for pictures of the carving process...

Jeff's Magic Show

We went to a magic show at lunch. Jeff turned a piece of string into a bunny! The bunny was naked but then we put a blue and red scarf in the magic bag and a mini magic wand too. Then Jeff pulled it out and it was a magician bunny. It was holding a card on his foot. It was the card Mia picked for a card trick. The magic words were "1 2 3 Abracadabra Peanut Butter Sandwiches!" He had 1 string and turned it into 2 strings and then into 3 and then 4. He had a feather stick and he put it behind his back and turned it upside down so it looked like the feather changed. (It was a joke). Then he flipped it and ran his hand over and all the colors changed into a pattern. Mrs. Caldwell and Mrs. Abrahams tied his thumbs together really tight and then he magically made them untied... we couldn't believe it! It was double super amazing!!!!

Count Down to Halloween

Hello Room 2 Families! I hope that eveyone was able to enjoy the awesome weather we had this weekend! I sure hope the weather holds out for our community walk on Tuesday and for Halloween on Sunday. My husband loves everything about Halloween - costumes, candy, and jack-o-laterns. He is a very talented pumpkin carver and each Halloween he choses a different person to carve into a pumpkin. A couple of years ago he carved my face (how romantic?) and last year he made a Mrs. Caldwell pumpkin.

This year he has volunteered to carve the face of one of the students in our classroom! Tomorrow morning we will have a draw to see who the lucky pumpkin will be!

A New Tool

This week I bought a new tool for our classroom - a Digital Voice Recorder. The recorder allows the kids to easily record themselves reading, singing, counting, or reflecting on thier learning. Many of the children have already learned to use the recorder independently. The recordings will enhance our learning portfolios. The kids have had a great time recording and listening to themselves read. Here is a sample of Amy reading Kevin Henkes' book "Sheila Rae the Brave".

Thanks A Lot

Last week we talked a lot about the things we are the most thankful for. We are thankful for family and friends, the clothes we have, the healthy food we have in our lunches each day, and for our homes. The children created beautiful "cartoonish" drawings using oil pastels and brightly coloured paper. Here is an Animoto of our work.

Weekender 4

Hello again Room 2 children and families! I can't believe that October is here already! Time flies when you're having fun. This weekend I spent some time enjoying the beautiful fall weather. I spent yesterday afternoon at McIvor Park doing a photo shoot with two very special kids, Emily and Aiden. We played in the leaves, climbed a couple of trees and checked out the play structure. Here is one of the pictures from our afternoon:

I hope that you had some time to enjoy the outdoors with your friends and family too! Have a great week!

The Weekend #3

Hello Room 2 children and families! This weekend was an exciting one for me. On Friday I was away from school at a SMART board workshop where I met some new people and learned some new tricks for the SMART board. I can't wait to show you! On Friday night, Cory (my husband) and I went to my cousin Bonnie's wedding. On Saturday morning (at 5 a.m. to be exact), I flew to Toronto with my friend Leslie and her mom to go shoe shopping. Leslie is getting married in December and wanted a very special pair of shoes to wear to her wedding. I also bought a very special pair of shoes to wear to her wedding. I will post a picture later. We spent the day shopping and at the wedding show in Toronto. In the evening we met up with some friends that live in Toronto and had sushi for supper. On Sunday morning (at 6 a.m.) we flew back to Winnipeg. It was a quick trip! I hope you had a great day with Mrs. Fast and a wonderful weekend with your families!

A Guest Teacher

Tomorrow (Friday, September 24) I will be away at a SMART board workshop. The children of Room 2 will have their first guest teacher of the year. Mrs. Fast is a wonderful substitute that I have invited into my classrooms many times before. I can't wait to hear all about the day! Have a great weekend!

Storybird

On Tuesday we took a trip to the computer lab and spent some time using the SMART board (which was very cool!). We visited an interactive writing site called "Storybird" and wrote a book together! Check out our Storybird below: (I'm not sure what happened to the words on the first page... It's supposed to say "Reddie and Greenie were playing in the forest")

The Weekend #2

Hello Room 2 children and families! This is my second "Weekender" of the 2010-2011 school year. This weekend was a very busy one in my house. As you know, my birthday was on Thursday and so I spent this weekend celebrating with friends and family. Yesterday my family came over to my house for dinner and to celebrate 5 birthdays! We celebrated my birthday, my brother-in-law's, my Auntie Bev, my Uncle Brian and my niece's. Many of their birthdays are not until next month but my aunt and uncle are leaving for Palm Springs next week. We ate lots of cake, opened some presents and spent time together. It was a great Sunday afternoon! Here are a couple of pictures:
From top left: 1. Presents for everyone 2. So many names on the cake... no room for "birthday". 3. Candy bouquet from Claire.

The Funnest Day

We have a new fish and crab. The fish's name is Splash. The crab's name is Pincher. We voted to pick the fish's name. Heidi gave us the crab and told us his name.

It was Mrs. Malkoske's 30th birthday. We sang happy birthday and ate cookies on a stick.

The number of the day was 16. We did 3 math centres. One centre was Power of 10 cards and one was writing numbers.

Jessica read a story to the class. We read another really good book.

We did our jobs too.

It was a REALLY fun day!!!

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!

Wow! I was so surprised this morning when I walked into my classroom and found a beautiful, giant birthday card, a cookie bouquet, and 23 singing children! Today is my birthday and the children of Room 2 know exactly how to make someone feel special on thier birthday. Thank you boys and girls!

Also a special thanks to Mrs. Oddy for organizing the surprise and for the delicious cookies! We all enjoyed them very much!

Open House

Thank you to all of the families that attended our Open House night. It was so nice to meet everyone and to get to know you a little bit. I hope that you enjoyed your "tour" of our classroom. The children were very excited to show you the things we have done so far. Please feel free to contact me at school or through email if you ever have any questions or concerns.

The Weekend

Hello Room 2 Families!
This weekend your children brought their TWAS and Weekender books home for the first time. I thought that it was only fair for me to complete a "Weekender" as well... so here it goes. I spent this weekend with family and friends. My husband's grandmother celebrated her 80th birthday on Saturday with a party at the town hall in Whitemouth, MB. We went out to Whitemouth for the day to help with the party and celebrate with Grandma Jeannie. On Sunday, my husband and I had another celebration (sort of) at our house. Each year on the first weekend of the NFL season, our friends come over to our place for "Meat Day". "Meat Day" is an annual tradition that began 4 years ago in our house. Basically, we visit, watch football, and eat a lot of meat! I am not much of a cook (before I met my husband I ate cereal for supper most nights!), so I stick to dishes duty. I LOVE to bake and so each year I make the (meat-free) dessert. See you tomorrow!

Here are a couple of pictures of this year's treat (mini-burger cupcake ice cream sandwiches):

A busy summer...

Hello again! Well, it has been a very busy summer and I can't believe that it is quickly coming to an end. I feel a little bit sad that summer is ending and that the beautiful weather is leaving us again, but I am excited to start the year at a new school with new students and families! I can't wait to meet you!
This summer I spent a lot of time with my friends and family (usually by the pool or at the beach!), went to a lot of weddings, did some running, reading and gardening... and lots of shopping! One of my favourite things to do is to take pictures... and I took a lot of them this summer! Here are some of my favourite shots.
P.S. All of the little people are my nieces and nephews. You will hear lots of stories about them throughout the year!

Progress!

Hello again! I was back at Dr. Hamilton today trying to make it through the mountain of boxes I brought over with me. I managed to unpack 8 boxes, put up some bulletin boards and fill up my cupboards. It's starting to feel a little like home...
